From the Desk of Dr. Einhorn—
The year is rapidly coming to an end, so I wanted to give everyone an update on all of the school events between now and the end of the year. One of the big events is our Core testing, and I’ve attached a separate note with details of dates. Please do everything you can to make sure your children are at school on test days.
We celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week May 6th-10th, so please do whatever you can to let your child’s teacher know that their time and efforts are appreciated. We also have our 2nd grade concert next Thursday, the 9th, at 2:00, and the week ends with our year-end DIBELS testing Thursday and Friday, May 9th and 10th. Criterion referenced testing begins on Monday, May 13th and ends with our last make-up session on Thursday, May 30th. We’ll also be doing Kindergarten entrance assessments the week of May 20th for our newest Trailblazers, along with year-end assessments for this year’s kindergartners.
As usual, we’ve had many parents dedicate hours of their time and expertise as volunteers in the school, and we’ll honor that service at our Volunteer Luncheon on Friday, May 17th, at 1 p.m. in the cafeteria. Our parent involvement makes a tremendous difference in student success throughout the year, and we want to take the time to say thanks for all of the volunteer contributions. Look for invitations next week, and please RSVP as soon as possible!
Dual Immersion will grow again next year, and Kit Howard will be our third grade Dual Immersion English teacher. We’re in the process of hiring her French counterpart—that information will be out as soon as possible! I’d like to meet with parents of all current and new Dual Immersion students on Tuesday, May 21st, at 6:00 in the gym, so please plan on attending if possible.
May and June end with the following events:
May 22nd –Last day for Soaring for Success after-school program
May 29th—5th grade track meet at Ecker
May 30th—4th grade track meet at Ecker and 3rd grade concert
May 31st—Field Day for 1st-5th grade students and dress rehearsal after school for
Talent Show
June 3rd—Trailside Talent Show
June 4th—Year-end Trailblazer assembly
June 5th—5th grade Movin’ On assembly
June 6th—Last day for students
June 7th—Last day for teachers
Please note—the district calendar was modified, so students’ first day next year will be Monday, August 26th for grades 1-5 and Thursday, August 29th for K. I’ll work through June 26th and will be back in the building August 1st.

Information for Parents about this year’s CRT’s
Core testing will begin at Trailside Elementary on Monday, May 13th and end on Friday, May 24th for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades.
Make-ups will be administered Tuesday, May 28th-Thursday, May 30th.
DIBELS Reading Testing for K-5 will be on Thursday and Friday, May 9th-10th.
What is a CRT, and how is it used?
As each school year draws to a close, all 3rd-5th grade students in Utah elementary public schools are required to take an end-of-level test. This test is called a CRT (Criterion-Referenced Test) or Core test. The results are used statewide and nationwide to assess student competencies in particular areas. The CRT is based on the Utah Core Curriculum, or the statewide standards that are taught in each grade. Your child’s performance on this test contributes to our school results, which will help determine whether or not Trailside is meeting the standards of our nation’s No Child Left Behind Act. Results are also used to appropriate funding for areas in need of improvement. Educators use the results on a classroom level to determine the effectiveness of teaching strategies and the need for additional student services.
How can I help my student perform well on the CRT?
Please remember stress is not good for a child’s physical or mental health! While we want to encourage students to take these tests seriously and do their best, we do not want them to worry. Please provide nutritious meals during testing times, and make sure your child gets plenty of sleep. Please try to have your child here on time each day during testing. Do not schedule routine doctor or dental appointments during CRT testing.
Students, educators, parents, and community members can gain access to the Utah Core Curriculum (still testing with the old core) and UTIPS information through the websites below, provided by the Utah State Office of Education. Many teachers use UTIPS practice tests at school, but students are also encouraged to use them at home. While this is not a test that students can “cram” for, they may take the online practice tests as many times as they’d like at school or at home.
